Ran

Ran [DVD/Netflix]. My mom recommended this title to me. Its Akira Kurosawa's take on Shakespear's King Lear. Three stars. Click below for my full review...Its an epic tale of the treachery of three sons and their father. This is a Japanese take on a classic story by William Shakespear. Also a japanese take on a period film with warlords and battles.

Its been a while

Haven't put anything here in a while. Some profound things have happened in my life recently, but I don't know how to put them down here. But life does go one and things are going well. Summer's pretty much over, the best summer in Seattle's history by most people's account. The kids are back in school already...

Fun with Saddam

GYA posted a really amusing link to a Photoshop contest for doctoring pictures of Saddam and Dubyah. Very amusing stuff, so I thought I'd do up my own.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines [Theater]. The buzz on this wasn't very good, but we thought we should see it in the theater anyways. Its obvious that this wasn't directed by Cameron. Two stars. Click below for my full review. We saw this movie in the worst theater in Western Washington. The dank, run down Alderwood theaters. 10% of the seats were broken, it was dank and the movie was merely using stereo. But enough foreshadowing...

My telescope is fixed!

I finally sent my telescope in for repair at Celestron. Almost 2 years ago I cracked the corrector plate of my C8. Well in July I sent it in and it arrived yesterday, just in time for Mars' closest approach.

It has a new matced corrector plate and cleaned, collimated optics. So far the results are good.

Drawdown and Surge

Drawdown and Surge? What the hell is that? Well, we very nearly learned the hard way what it was on our river outing this weekend in Longview. We beached my dad's boat on a nice sandy beach on the south bank of the Columbia River to let the kids play in the sand. After about an hour, a massive cargo ship appeared downstream, approaching fast.

Ringu

Ringo [DVD/Netflix] Same story, slightly rougher than the Hollywood release. Two and a half stars. Click below for my full review...Having already seen the Ring, I thought it would be worthy to see the Japanese original. We watched it with my mom who, unlike Jenn and I, did not need the subtitles.

I spy

I Spy [DVR, netflix]. Midly funny, a few good laughs, but overall just a midly interesting movie. One and a half stars. Click below for my full review...My hopes weren't high on this movie going in, and they weren't exceeded. Owen Wilson was his usual aw-shucks, yet semi-cerebral self that we've seen in Shanghai Noon/Knights, Armageddon and other films. Murphy was his usual over-the-top self that we've seen in everything he's been in.

Hiking Squire Creek Pass

On the drive to see Annie Get Your Gun in Leavenworth with Tim and Joyce, Tim and I decided to take a hike the next day. Despite getting home from the play at 1:30am, we deciided to go anyways, and were on our way to Darrington by 8:30.
